Eighth Grade

RELIGION

Faith First; Liturgy and Morality.  RCL Resources for Christian Living.
     The objective of the eighth grade course is to complete the student’s preparation to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.  A review of the Ten Commandments, the Seven Sacraments, and prayer are stressed areas of study.  Church history and liturgy are learned to bring the student to a fuller faith in God.  Morality lessons are a major part of the year to prepare the student to live in today’s world.

The Catholic Vision of Love, Level 8, is included to instill moral values.

ALGEBRA

Algebra, Structure and Method Book 1.   McDougal Littell.
      The Algebra course continues the study of the basics and expands to include two variable equations, linear equation graphing, rational and irrational numbers and quadratic functions.  Problem solving using all math operations and functions is incorporated into the lessons.

SCIENCE

Earth  Science, Holt Rinehart Winston.
      Students explore the major concepts of earth and space science through experimentation, hands-on activities, demonstrations, discussions, and lectures.  Students are made aware of the relationship of science to their daily lives.  Scientific Method is stressed as a problem solving strategy.

 

LANGUAGE
ARTS

Literature, Silver Level  Prentice Hall
     Emphasis is placed on a review of reading skills and writing in the different areas of narration, description, exposition, and persuasion.  Classical literature is read and discussed.  Literary terms are studied and utilized.
Language Arts Today, Classic Edition McGraw Hill
    Course focus is on the basics of grammar and incorporating them into the writing experience.
Vocabulary Workshop, Level C  Sadlier-Oxford
     300 words are presented over fifteen units of study to be practiced, defined, properly spelled and used in an effort to increase the students working vocabulary.
We Write to Read, Peterson Directed Handwriting Advanced Cursive
       Improvement of skill and fluency in letter formation is achieved through practice exercises in slant, size, rhythm, and stroke control.

HISTORY

SOCIAL STUDIES

American History, Globe Fearon.
       This course picks up with Reconstruction and carries through to the present.  Students are encouraged to be aware of political current events and attempt to relate them to past history.  The goal is to gain insight into who we are as Americans and understand how we built our present.
