Sixth Grade

RELIGION

We Believe, We Are God’s People 6, Sadlier Publishing Company.
The major theme of the sixth grade is to learn more about God’s love for his people, and his action in their lives throughout history.  Students will be lead in celebrating, sharing, and living their Catholic faith through prayer, scripture, and song. 

The Catholic Vision of Love, Level 6, is included to instill moral values.

MATHEMATICS

Connections, Heath Mathematics Level 6.
The four major math operations are reviewed using whole numbers, decimals and fractions. Integers are introduced. Students learn to value math, communicate mathematically, gain confidence in their mathematical abilities, learn to reason mathematically and become mathematical problem solvers.  Major concepts covered are: estimation, measurement, money, ratio, proportion, percent, geometry, and use of data.

SCIENCE

Science Horizons, Silver Burdett Ginn.
Sixth grade science continues to focus on teaching the skills necessary to think like a scientist.  Critical thinking, scientific reasoning, predicting, observing, and classifying are stressed skills.  Problem solving through use of the Scientific Method and hands-on activities enhance the learning of the basic facts in the four units of study: Life Science, Physical Science, Earth Science, and the Human Body.

 

LANGUAGE
ARTS

Great Expectations,, Scott Foresman Reading
Each story of the series begins with a skill lesson which will be the focus of the story work.  Some skills are: sequence, author’s viewpoint, cause and effect, generalizing, visualizing, making judgments, predicting, and summarizing.
Spelling is part of the series.  Spelling of words are chosen from the story.  Practice is given to words with prefixes, suffixes, compounds, contractions, vowel sounds, and correct letter order.
Grammar is also a part of the Scott Foresman Series.  Parts of speech, sentence kind and structure, and writing effectively are emphasized.
Vocabulary Workshop, Level A, Sadlier-Oxford.
Building student vocabulary skills are accomplished through practicing, defining, spelling, and using the 300 words presented in the fifteen units of the Vocabulary Workshop,       Level A.
We Write to Read, Peterson Directed Handwriting, Level 6.
class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"> Handwriting skills of spacing, neatness, slant and rhythmic letter formation and connections are practiced to improve the overall appearance of student cursive writing.

HISTORY

SOCIAL STUDIES

World Geography and Cultures, Globe Fearon.
The sixth grade program encompasses a study of world geography, with an emphasis on the reading of different types of maps.  The study of each world region includes history, economics, and cultural concepts, fostering both interest in and tolerance of other cultures.
