The St. Irenaeus St. Vincent de Paul Society gratefully acknowledges an Easter donation of more than $350 by students in the parish CCD program. The very generous donation, which was the result of the students' Lenten sacrifices, is especially appreciated because of a recent significant increase in both the number and size of requests being made of the St. Vincent de Paul Society by people in the area who are in desperate need of help making their mortgage, rent and utility payments, or paying for food and groceries. Already this year, the Society has provided almost $19,000 in assistance to some 50 families and individuals in the Oakmont, Verona and nearby Penn Hills communities. This was done only by the ongoing and very generous support of members of the St. Irenaeus parish community, the only source of the Society's funds. Thank you for helping the St. Vincent de Paul Society help our neighbors in need.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

First Communion This weekend, on Sunday, April 27th at 1:00 p.m., we have 46 second graders making their First Communion. Please continue to keep them in your prayers as they receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time.

May Crowning On Sunday, May 11th the First Communion class will participate in the May Crowning of the Blessed Mother at the 11:00 Mass.

For the Ride Home When children are orphaned, they often hold on to something to remind them of whose they are. Orphan Annie had a half of a locket, Oliver Twist had a letter, and some victims of the holocaust had smuggled photographs. Even without the physical presence of their parents, orphaned children very much felt connected to their parents. This is the image Jesus gives us in today's Gospel as well. He explains that it is the Holy Spirit that is with us and helps us know we are God's. It is the Spirit that guides us to live the way God wants us to.

Recall that wind is a symbol of the Spirit. Walk outside and feel the wind. Is it a gentle breeze today or is it gusting? Think about why the wind is considered a symbol of the Holy Spirit. As the Holy Spirit leads us and guides us like the wind, are we gently moved or sometimes does it take a hurricane wind to get us moving? Think of some things your family has been guided to do by the Holy Spirit. Also consider some things the Spirit might be calling you to presently. Cooperate with the Spirit and make plans accordingly.

Discussion Starters
I know the Holy Spirit was guiding me directly once when . . .
I have felt orphaned before, but I know the Spirit was with me because . . .
I have seen the Spirit at work in our parish when . . .

Our Lady of Grace appeared three times to Catherine Laboure, a Daughter of Charity in Paris, France, in 1830. On November 27, 1830, Our Lady appeared to her and was standing on a white globe, with rings on her fingers that radiated different rays of light and represented the power of her intercession. She asked to have a medal struck after this image. She said that all who would wear the medal would receive great graces.
