********************

On Ash Wednesday the Church asks us to observe a special period of preparation for the participation in our Lord's Passion, Death and Resurrection. This period is known as the season of Lent. Lent is a time when we make space in our lives to think about our relationship with our heavenly Father and the ways we are responding or failing to respond to His love and care for us. Traditional Lenten Guidelines

1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.
2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59.
3. Pastors and parents are to see that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age.
4. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law.

PASSION PLAY "Why Must He Die?"
presented by
Tri-county Choir Institute's Teen Chorale

Sunday, March 7, 2010 2:00 PM at St. Irenaeus Church

"Why Must He Die?" is a 75-minute meditation through music, drama, and liturgical dance on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. This is a unique passion play using a play within a play. Throughout the trial of Jesus by Pilate and the Accusers, the action is repeatedly frozen while the disciples and apostles reflect on the life of Jesus and react to the events leading to His Death. They share their thoughts with the audience as if they were observing the trial. Written and directed by Sewickley Hills resident Linda Wallace, "Why Must He Die?" has been presented in over 100 churches and schools over the last 18 years. A good will offering will be taken.

SCHOOL NEWS

ST. IRENAEUS SCHOOL THANKS YOU During the past week, the Diocese of Pittsburgh celebrated National Catholic Schools Week with a variety of activities. St. Irenaeus School joined in the festivities with an Open House and events every day of the week. The winners of our Open House contest were: Victoria Groves (Gr. 3)-Pittsburgh Penguins Prize package; Stephen Wilson (Gr. 5)-mini MP3 player. The theme for this year was "Catholic Schools: Dividends for Life". It is important to realize that the support YOU provide as a parish community pays amazing dividends for our students and for the community. Each year at this time we use Catholic Schools Week to say "Thank you" to the members of St. Irenaeus Parish for your generous support. Your investment is "paying off". We want to add a special note of thanks to Father Frank and ALL the parish members because of your willingness to share the resources of the parish as an investment in the future. Your generosity has helped to create the Catholic Schools success story. If you missed our Open House last Sunday, please stop in any time during the week. Our doors are open for you! We will be happy to show you the result of your "investment". -Sr. Carol Ann Papp OSF, Principal
